The building that is known today as the
Palmela Palace is part of a property located opposite to the old Fábrica das
Sedas (the Silk Factory), which was part of the land
formerly belonging to the 'Noviciado da Cotovia'. Triangular in shape, the property extends from the public fountain known as 'Chafariz do Rato', through Rua do Salitre, to former Rua Direita da Fábrica das Sedas, where the silk factory was located, and which is now known as Rua da Escola Politécnica. The property is encircled by an enclosure wall of considerable height, the function of which is to support the ground, given the differences of the ground levels between the garden and those two streets. This enclosure wall is entirely covered with limestone and is crowned with a balustrade, interrupted at intervals by plynths supporting ceramic urns. It is harmoneously integrated in the fountain, constructed two centuries earlier in the same stone. A plain wall separates the east garden from the adjoining yards. It contrasts, in its simplicity, with the rest of the enclosure wall. |

Besides the Palace, various structures can be found in this perimeter. On the western side, beyond the escarpment, and in front of the silk factory, there is a small pavilion, english in conception, which serves as a belvedere pursuant to the Portuguese tradition. The proximity of the pavilion to the fountain - although appearing to diminish its importance to a certain degree - nevertheless contributes to the originality of the ensemble through the introduction of a picturesque element. Turned to the north there is the duchess D. Maria Luísa's studio. This is rustic in appearance, and has a certain nordic flavour due to its exterior simulating wooden beams. |
